I regret to have put myself in a position where you have felt that I need to be completely shut out of viewing your work, which I have admired and looked forward to for these many months....The Leica will be a great instrument for your capture and invention..Alas, I will not be able to bear witness...I wish an unencumbered path....and again, read the above quote, means as much today as a year ago..
Walking past manicured lawns and McMansions, it occurs to me that people are making no trace of art in this place. "We no longer create art in our lives," I think. "For the sake of neatness and conformity, we live blandly. Our clothing is uniform, our houses identical, the grids in which we live constrain our movement, and any deviation from the norm, which produces maximum profit, is marginalized."
"We need graffiti!" I think desperately. "Public art, earthworks, anonyart, happenings! surprising juxtapositions, complex ideas, guerilla art, ma, sloppily pasted posters on utility poles, soapboxes on which old men stand and speak, color so vibrant the heart writhes, well-placed words, street art, challenges to our subjective mindsets, things that make us see in new ways."
Then, (at that moment!) I began to see art around me.
"If our government had its wishes, it would have Baptists coast to coast, all the same. Our job is to keep alive Buddhists, and satanists, and witches, and Hell's Angels, and scorpions and rattlesnakes and the blues -- and all that stuff government would like to do away with because they're an irritant." -Ken Kesey
